There is so much misinformation around intimate waxing, specifically Hollywood & Brazillian waxing. Most salons and people here in the UK don’t actually know what a true Brazilian wax is and throughout the years, different variations have been created and given different names.
It’s important to us that you understand exactly what is included in each of the different bikini services we offer and that there is full transparency with pricing so that there are no awkward conversations talking about body parts and how much hair will be removed.
To make things a little easier for you to choose whether a High Bikini Wax, a G-String wax, a Brazilian or a Hollywood is the right service for you and to help you know the difference between them, here’s a detailed breakdown.

A message from Hannah…
Girls, if you are having an intimate wax (E.g. Hollywood, Brazilian or G-string) you will need to strip off from the waist down.
If you are going for a wax make sure you are going somewhere reputable. A fully qualified Beauty Therapist at a trustworthy salon.
As with anything, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
If you’re paying £10 for a Brazilian at the place over the road, you’re going to get exactly what you pay for.
They just have bad technique and could cause serious damage to your private parts!
WAXING PRE-TREATMENT ADVICE
To get the best possible results from your treatment, please follow the guidelines below.
- Let your hair grow for at least 4 weeks. The hair should be 1/4 inch long (about the length of a grain of rice). Waxing will be more painless and effective if you wait long enough to wax.
- Avoid waxing when your skin is sensitive. The best time to wax is a week after your menstrual cycle when your pain threshold is highest. Do not schedule an appointment during your time of the month.
- Avoid tanning 72 hours before your wax. Time spent out in the sun or on a sunbed will make your skin sensitive. Even if you don’t get a sunburn, the skin is more irritability-prone right after a tan.|
- Before your appointment, exfoliate to remove dead skin and lift trapped hair. Exfoliating will reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs after the appointment. Exfoliate several days before to prevent itching and redness. I recommend A-List Beauty Exfoliating Washcloth and Ruff Stuff Body Scrub for best results.
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing, don’t wear skinny jeans or tight fabrics for your appointment to avoid irritating your skin after the appointment.
- Check your skin for irritation, sunburns, or breakouts. Treat any rashes or sunburns before your appointment to avoid tearing skin while being waxed. Look for any cuts or bruises as well: even small shaving cuts can develop irritation when waxed.
- Moisturise your skin. After you exfoliate, apply a moisturiser to your skin. This will hydrate your skin and keep it soft until the day of the appointment. Exfoliation can leave your skin dry, so always moisturise afterwards. Outback Organics Bush balm is great for this.
- No caffeine the day of wax (this can make you 50% more sensitive).
- Take an Ibuprofen 30 minutes before waxing if you are concerned about pain.
- Shower before a body waxing appointment.
- No retinoids, glycolic acids, peels or acne prescriptions for 10 days before facial waxing.
WAXING FAQ’s
How long does the hair need to be?
You will need to grow your hair for at least 4-6 weeks before a wax it should be about the length of a grain of rice/ 1/4 inch long. If you don’t leave it that long- we will know and you will be wasting your own time and money. hang tough and let it grow!
If your hair is any longer, you may feel some discomfort when the wax is applied, but you can help yourself by trimming to roughly 1/4 inch long before your appointment to minimise this.
How long will the results last?
If you don’t usually wax, your hairs will grow back slower than usual for the first couple of weeks. after this- your hair growth may speed up again.
After repeated wax treatments your hairs will appear finer, softer and sparser. this is not permanent but will last while you are having regular waxes and not shaving.
How often should I be waxed?
Every 4-6 weeks ideally, but this depends on how fast your hair grows. Everyone is different. Most of our clients like to come every 4 weeks to ensure that clean, smooth and sexy feeling all the time- some can last for 6 weeks. after time you may find you can go longer in-between waxes.
Why get waxed?
You won’t get that horrible stubbly, rough feeling you get after shaving nor does it damage the skin in any way like those foul smelling hair removal creams!
Waxing is good for men and woman of all ages. Being waxed before a holiday is also a great idea. Who wants to be sitting around the pool looking like a yeti!
A lot of younger girls love to have Bikini waxes as the “Boyfriend loves it” wink wink!
Will it hurt?
Everyone feels and handles pain differently so if you do experience any- it will be for a matter of seconds. That’s it!
It stings but only for a few seconds while the wax is being removed. It is very tolerable and avoiding too much caffeine, visiting during the time of your month and coming when rested and not too stressed helps too.
You can take a couple of painkillers around an hour before the treatment if you are concerned about pain.
Conquer the fear!
I’ve never had an intimate wax before, which one should I choose?
There are four different types of bikini wax styles to choose from at A-List Beauty. If you’re not sure which you want to start with, you can read up on the different bikini wax styles beforehand in detail here and choose which one is best for you.
What wax do you use?
The best wax on the market of course! I use “Kim Lawless Cockney Rebel’ wax for Bikini waxing which is one of the highest quality waxes developed by The Wax Queen herself. This hot/ hard wax can be used on all hair types and helps to minimise the breakage of hair, making sure it’s fully removed from the root, with no after-sting and reducing ingrown hairs giving you the most gentle and comfortable wax possible.
How can I make it more comfortable?
It is a fact that shaved hair is much tougher and stronger than waxed hair which will make it more painful.
Step away from the razor! You can help yourself by trimming the hair before you come to about ½ an inch or the length of a grain of rice. The longer the hair the more painful it will be.
The first time is always the worst but after that it gets much better.
What if I am on my period?
It’s absolutely fine to still get waxed whilst on your period (lots of people do all the time) – just make sure you shower beforehand & pop a fresh tampon in making sure the string is tucked in, or even better a menstrual cup if you use them. You can just be a bit more sensitive when on your period, so you could take some paracetamol an hour before your appointment if you are concerned about that.
As intimate waxing is my speciality and Hollywoods are my most popular service, (and have been for the past 12+ years), I’m sure you can imagine I come across this a lot! Most of my clients visit every 4-6 weeks for intimate waxing services – so you’re not the only one and it’s never been a problem.

What to look out for:-
Your skin may be pink or raised for several hours following your waxing, but this is normal. If any spots or rashes persist for more than a week, or become infected, you should see your GP.
Why come to A-List Beauty?
Girls if you are having an intimate wax (E.g.
Read the reviews from our existing clients- they speak for themselves.
When should I exfoliate before a wax?
Gently exfoliate your skin a day or two before waxing, but skip harsh scrubs the day of your waxing appointment. Exfoliation helps wax grab hair and not skin, but it can also over-sensitise the skin, so lighter is better.
A rough washcloth such as A-List Beauty Exfoliating Washcloth is perfect for gentle exfoliation, but don’t scrub too hard.
I’m pregnant, can I still get waxed?
Hormonal changes and extra blood flowing to your skin (especially your pubic area) can make you more sensitive to pain, just something to bear in mind….
But if waxing is usually your hair removal method of choice, then you’re fine to keep going as normal during pregnancy.
If you are new to waxing, you can be waxed after your 12 week check-up and have had the go-ahead by your midwife or GP.
WAXING AFTER A C-SECTION
As long as the scar has completely closed and there are no scabs, it’s fine to wax after a C-section. It usually heals around 6-8 weeks after.
I am going on holiday / have a special occasion coming up when should I book my wax for?
Before any holidays or special events, you should have at least 2-3 waxing treatments (about 4-6 weeks apart from each other).
Try to book your holiday appointment 48 hours before you go to give your pores time to close up and any redness to calm down.
The sunnier weather in hotter climates can irritate just-waxed skin, especially around intimate areas, so it’s best to wax a couple of days in advance. Plus, salty sea water and public pools can aggravate freshly waxed underarms, legs and bikini lines.
Do you wax men?
Our salon welcomes all genders but please note we are only trained to wax vulvas.

Is having a hollywood wax embarrassing?
It’s totally normal to feel embarrassed or nervous about your first wax, but ladies please remember we are professional waxing specialists. We wax body parts every single working day and have done for a very long time!
If it isn’t enough coming from us, our existing clients explain how comfortable they feel during their visits with us via our Google, Facebook & Next Door reviews. Feel free to take a peak!
I feel really self conscious...
Girls, please don’t let body confidence issues affect your decision to get waxed. Everyone feels a bit self-conscious, especially the first few times and Hannah knows from 20 years in the industry that this is the main reason you have been putting it off. But we’re here to tell you…
WE DO NOT CARE care what shape or size you are! Cellulite, stretch marks and mummy tummies are all NORMAL.
If you want a Hollywood/ Brazilian then yes you do have to strip off from the waist down, but please don’t let this stop you… it’s what we do all day every day. We’ve seen it all and do not judge.
We will be focused on one thing: getting you as smooth as possible with the least amount of discomfort.
How long before a spray tan should I get waxed?
We recommend waxing at least 48 hours before your spray tan. This gives your follicles time to close, helping your tan go on smoothly and evenly.
Waxing is ideal as it removes hair from the root and can keep your skin smooth for weeks—meaning your tan will not only look better but last longer too.
I’m almost convinced. Do you have testimonials?
